Here at Tafolla & Hammack Family Dentistry in Colorado Springs, our goal as a practice is to keep your smile in great shape while providing you with wholehearted dental care. The most common service we provide as a practice is preventative dentistry, the field associated with preventing cavities, gingivitis other issues from developing. One form of preventative dentistry is educating you on proper brushing and flossing techniques so you can remove food and plaque from your teeth on a regular basis. Sometimes, however, plaque can get trapped in tiny grooves and depressions in your teeth where the bristles of your toothbrush can’t reach. This can then lead to tooth decay if left standing too long. To prevent this, we can apply dental sealants to protect these vulnerable areas.
Dental sealants serve as a barrier to prevent cavities from forming. They are made from a plastic-based material and are generally applied to the chewing surfaces of your back teeth, where decay occurs most frequently. Applying sealants is a quick and simple process wherein our doctors paint the sealant onto your dental enamel and use a curing light to bond and harden it to the surface. A shallow layer of sealant will fill the deep pits and grooves on your tooth’s surface, protecting them for years.
Children and teens are the most common candidates for dental sealants in order to prevent tooth decay in their adult teeth for as long as possible. That said, adults can benefit from them as well!
